For to Be Free – Human Rights Festival
23 March @ 10:00 - 25 March @ 23:55 SASTFree
This new three day festival held at Constitution Hill, home to the South African Constitutional Court, is inspired by the work of South African social justice organisations and aims to promote civil society activism and protection of human rights through discussions, art, music, literature and film.
Held during the week of the Human Rights Day public holiday (March 21) events happening at the inaugural Human Rights Festival include: Activism Row, an interactive and educational space where visitors can learn more about activism and the work of local NGOs; a Social Forum where educators, activists, creators, government representatives and entrepreneurs will come together to discuss the major issues facing South African civil society and; the Solution Sessions, a series of talks curated by Afropunk focused on youth participation in civil society. The arts also play a major role in the festival with a book fair, poetry festival, music festival, art exhibitions and a film festival.
On the final day of the Human Rights Festival the annual We The People Walk leaves from Constitution Hill taking a route through the streets of central Joburg in honour of South Africa’s democracy and the human rights enshrined in the country’s constitution.
