First Thursdays Rosebank

On the first Thursday of every month in Joburg you can look forward to contemporary art, live music, DJ sets, poetry, performance art, pop-up bars and more in one of the city’s three most artistic areas – Rosebank, Newtown and Braamfontein, as part of the First Thursdays event. By and large entrance to all First Thursdays venues is free and most events run between 17:00 and 22:00.
At the contemporary landmark development Keyes Art Mile (corner Keyes Avenue and Jellicoe Avenue) there’s a street party atmosphere with a section of the road closed off to traffic so that food trucks and pop-up bars can be set up on the street. Find new exhibition opening parties a top contemporary art galleries Everard Read, Circa Gallery (arrive early and head to the rooftop of the gallery to watch the sun set) and SMAC Gallery plus live music and gin cocktails at the Milk Bar. Then head upstairs to the 4PM at Mesh cocktail bar and the rooftop pop up Upstairs at Mesh for the finest cocktails and house DJs.
On Joburg’s Art Gallery Row with its wealth of contemporary art galleries all lined up along one block of Jan Smuts Avenue (between Bolton Road and Wells Avenue), drop by for exhibition launches and artist walkabouts at leading galleries such as Goodman Gallery, Circa Gallery, Gallery2, Lizamore & Associates and David Krut Projects, that present a great opportunity to socialise with local artists over a glass of wine and drop into one of the bars and restaurants clustered around Bolton Corner such as Coalition, Saigon Suzy or Bolton Road Collection for a drink.
